God Only Knows (Solo Acoustic) - Beach Boys Cover - Brian Wilson Tribute
#RIPbrianwilson #beachboyscover #beachboys The Challenge: Pay homage to melody and harmony master Brian Wilson. The Method: Take this pop masterpiece with multi-layered production and interweaving harmonies and strip it down to one voice and guitar. The Result: This video! The Beach Boys' original version of "God Only Knows" is untouchably rich. Instead of trying to compete, I took the song in the opposite direction, hoping to expose Brian's beguiling melody and chords, and Tony Asher's intimate and universal lyrics. While learning and arranging this for a single guitar and voice, Brian's genius was evident in every phrase and chord change. Just a few of the surprises I encountered: • The song sits ambiguously between two distinct key centers. • Brian uses inversions, diminished, and flatted-5th chords to add sadness and mystery. • It's the epitome of contrapuntal construction. A melodic phrase moves in one direction, while the bass line moves in another, and the chordal inner harmonies switch back-and-forth! Brian, here's to you and all the musical gifts you gave us. George Harrison's Forgotten Gem Reimagined
#RIPgeorgeharrison #georgeharrisoncover #beatlescover dedicated to Bara Waters I'm a major George Harrison fan, and one of his most personal songs is "What Is Life," from the epic triple LP "All Things Must Pass." The original version was a Phil Spector-produced wall of sound, with full band, fuzz guitars, huge vocal chorus, brass, and strings. And I love it that way. But… "What Is LIfe" has a beautiful melody and intimate lyrics. So I wanted to strip off the window-dressing and slow it into a downtempo folky dreamscape version that would honor George's spirit in every musical way I could think of. Acoustic guitars, sustained vocals and harmonies are the core. Then I added sitar, asian guzheng, plus slide guitars and Mellotron flutes for a classic Beatles touch! Tom was a frustrated recording engineer whose creative career took another path. He spent much of his adult life building gorgeous custom homes for celebrities and wealthy folks in places like Aspen and Laguna Beach. Late in 2003, his wife Shawn's brother Brian McCoy died unexpectedly. Tom surprised me by sharing some words he'd written for Brian's memorial service. He asked if I would create some music to support the words and convey more of Brian's essence. I sang the song Tom and I co-wrote at Brian's memorial in 2004. Some 20 years later, I revisited the song and realized Tom had also written the perfect words for me to sing at his own memorial. Godspeed Tomasso. In this faithful cover version, I honor John by playing his acoustic guitar parts almost identically to his own recording — standard tuning, capo 2. Then I change things up by using a rubber tube to mute the strings. This causes the notes to die away quickly and leaves open space for my 3-part vocal harmonies.(I was inspired by John, Paul and George's gorgeous 3-part harmonies on another Lennon classic, "Because" from Abbey Road.) I also added some fun surprises including a pair of Nashville-tuned electric guitars and a vintage Mellotron, plus electric bass and a mandolin solo. George Harrison's Masterpiece Gets a Psychedelic Makeover
#ripgeorgeharrison #beatles #blowupthesong "Resurrecting" and honoring George Harrison by slowing down and reimagining his classic pop-rock song "What Is Life" (from the 1970 triple LP "All Things Must Pass"). George's original version was a Phil-Spector-produced wall of sound. In this video, I show how I re-interpreted What Is Life as a lush, psychedelic, down-tempo ballad. I sang professionally for years, in all kinds of genres and formats, often singing the WRONG way. By my late 20s, I had damaged my vocal cords and needed vocal surgery not once, but twice! George Harrison's Masterpiece Gets a Psychedelic Makeover

I've been on a career-long quest to find a capo that works without retuning. It's a particular hassle on guitars with challenging necks (thick, thin, narrow, wide) and fretboards with either a flat or highly curved radius. It feels like I've tried nearly every capo on the market and I've spent hundreds of dollars in the process. But I learn the hard way so you don't have to! #JailMusic #ClubFed #musiclesson Only a handful of artists have recorded LPs while incarcerated. Believe it or not, I'm one of them. Take a trip back to 2004, during a dark period when I "toured" 5 jails in 25 days while being extradited from California to Michigan on a bogus charge. Fortunately, I spent 11 days at the Santa Ana Jail and its Federal holding facility, affectionately known as "Club Fed." Through multiple strokes of fate, I had the opportunity to band with other inmates and record 13 songs, eventually released on a CD entitled "Free Inside" by The Indictments. The writing and recording of the song are a magical true story of how an ancient Sufi poet and Croz himself inspired me to build a "Crosby choir" — stacking and layering vocals into the sound of a one-man choir, something Croz himself was a master of! I liked the song so much, it became the lead track on my 1995 LP called "Get This."
